Who Is Diane Nash?


Diane Nash is a 76 year old Chicago native. Today, her story might not be widely known but at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, she was extremely important. Nash was the brain behind the most successful movements of the Civil Rights Movement. She pioneered the Freedom Riders, a group that aimed to desegregate interstate travel. While she was a student at Howard University, Nash co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Diane Nash is also known for bringing the harsh voting restrictions of Selma, Alabama. She worked with Doctor Martin Luther King Jr on one of the most influential pieces of legislature to pass through Congress. Diane has been decorated with The Rosa Parks Award and The Freedom Award among others. Nash not only advocates for racial equality, but gender equality as well. She is a pacifist and takes nonviolent approaches to the problems that plagued her in 1965 and today. Diane Nash is a figure of freedom, intelligence, and perseverance.
